Japanese Knotweed is a pesky plant that has made its way into many back gardens and other areas of the UK. Originally found in Eastern Asia, Japanese Knotweed’s natural habitat is on the side of volcanoes. However, it was introduced to the UK in Victorian times as an ornamental plant. Keep reading to find out more about the Japanese Knotweed and why it is so harmful.

What Is Japanese Knotweed?

Japanese Knotweed is a plant that looks very similar to bamboo, and is considered a weed here in the UK. It is not poisonous to humans and doesn’t cause burns but you should still keep your pets away from chewing on it.

How To Spot It

There are some common areas that you will find Japanese Knotweed, such as:

●    Road sides

●    Common along rivers and streams

●    Railways embankments

●    Man made habitats

It has a similar look to bamboo, and if you are still not sure if you’ve spotted it, you can always look up a picture to get a better idea.

Why Is It Harmful?

Seeing as it isn’t poisonous or obviously harmful to human health, what is it that makes Japanese Knotweed so harmful? This plant grows very fast in a variety of soil types, meaning it can spread extremely quickly and it is extremely difficult to get rid of.

Paying for Japanese Knotweed removal or treatment can be extremely expensive, and the last thing you need to worry about. It is such an invasive plant species that it can even decrease the value of properties, so if you spot this weed in your garden, call a professional as soon as you can.

What To Do

If you spot Japanese Knotweed on your property, it is your responsibility to stop it from spreading outside of your property. It is usually best to call a professional to remove and dispose of it effectively.

You don’t have to legally remove the Knotweed, but if it spreads outside your land, there may be legal consequences.
